Thanks for another in-depth article. We're lucky to have you covering our neighborhood, and I'm very much looking forward to the follow-up on Alvelo-Rivera.
Reading this article I felt like part of the neighborhood. I like how you began with a brief description of the cultural character of that area. Then, you gave candidates a chance to explain their positions on issues, but also gave the reader a real sense of their personalities.
During a time when our streets are militarized and people are abducted, including children at their schools, and people attending church are tear-gassed and targeted, I think it’s pretty wild to write about a political leader who has done NOTHING for our community besides sell tamales for an undocumented person and share their EXACT corner location. Like what?? This is so out of touch. The people of the 33rd ward want leaders who are on the ground, fighting against the violence coming from our own government. Andrade has done NOTHING. 33rd ward working families works so incredibly hard, day in and day out, organizing and helping create a safer community. Do you realize that ICE is literally pulling people off the street and brutalizing them, sending them to detention centers where some end up dying? And worse, disappearing them so ther families never have answers? I work in mental health in this community, and you have NO idea what we’re seeing as a result of this occupation in our streets. Shame on you for writing this. It’s Chicago, we’re progressive, get with it or leave.
I have no idea where the tamale location is, nor did I provide its exact location. As for awareness of the plight of immigrants in my neighborhood, please read my November article that you can find in my archives. The article, including advice from a counselor like you, begins:
“During a recent community event at a United Methodist church, residents learned how to support immigrant neighbors who fear what one activist described as “racial profiling,” “kidnappings,” and “concentration camps.”
Inside Renewed Hope church in Albany Park, representatives from a dozen organizations set up resource tables and encouraged about 75 attendees to choose a single cause to support with time or money.”
You are shaming Seth Slabaugh for his work in covering and writing about candidate Jamie Andrade's public appearance to talk about his candidacy and accomplishments? I say COOL YOUR HEELS. Seth is a retired newspaper reporter, a resident of our community, and now providing his time, experience, and expertise for free to help keep us well informed, celebrate our successes, and keep us safe. Incidentally he and his wife only recently relocated from Indiana and immediately sought ways to engage with our neighbors and community. How fortunate we all are.

Chat GPT missed a misspelling of precinct: "It’s an organization that has now taken over every seat in the neighborhood (including precint captains)."
At least it didn’t create any errors, which my human editors have done
